5 NEWS UPDATE: I-79 Back Open In Monongalia County

Interstate 79 is back open in both directions in Monongalia County. Crews had both directions of traffic closed so they could clean up from Tuesday's accident.


I-79 northbound just after the Goshen Road exit will remain closed until 4:00 a.m., Wednesday.

As of 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, the southbound lanes have re-opened, but will close again so crews can continue cleaning up.


An accident involving two tractor trailers caused some major headaches and backed up traffic for miles on Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 79.

Investigators told 5 News that crash happened around 2:30 in the northbound lanes near the Goshen Road exit.

Apparently a truck carrying liquid propane rolled over and went down an embankment. Officials with the State Police said another truck was also involved. One person had to be taken to the hospital, but apparently wasn't hurt very seriously.

At times both lanes of Interstate 79 northbound, along with one southbound lane, were closed.
Officials with MECCA 911 said that as of 7 p.m. southbound was completely open and one northbound lane was open. However, they also told 5 News that area will be closed as officials clean up the accident.
