5 NEWS UPDATE (5/26):

At 1:00 p.m., the Mileground Roundabout was opened to traffic.

5 NEWS UPDATE (5/26):

The opening for roundabout at Rt. 705 and the Mileground has been pushed back because construction crews were delayed thanks to Tuesday night's storms.

According to officials with the Department of Transportation the crews will be out there at 6 p.m. Wednesday night to try and get the work done.

Stick with 5 News for the latest.

Original Story (5/25):

Barring any storms, or major setbacks, a very busy intersection in Morgantown is going to get a new look starting Wednesday right before the morning rush.

That's because the much anticipated roundabout that'll be located at 705 and the Mileground is set to open.

To put some questions to bed, officials with the Department of Transportation held some classes on Tuesday about negotiating a roundabout.

Tuesday afternoon construction crews were putting the finishing touches on the new newest installment of a roundabout.

The opening of the newest one comes a littler earlier in the summer than officials had hoped for. Originally officials with the DOT planned to have drivers using it near the start of the school year. However, thanks to some nice weather, and the fact they need to get traffic off of the old intersection so they could get some other construction done, the opening has been bumped up to Wednesday.

If you plan to drive in that area at all it's important to remember they're designed to slow drivers down.

Brent Walker, the communications director with the DOT, said roundabouts have been shown to be very safe.

"We look at like a clock," he said. "If you're going a quarter, or a half then you can go in either lane. Anything past a half you want to stay in the left lane."

The DOT has an instructional video on how to negotiate a roundabout. You can watch the video by clicking here.
