Arson Awareness Week Offers Tips to Stay Safe

There are more than 16,000 fires set intentionally each year, so it's important you know how to keep yourself protected.
 
Today marks the beginning of arson awareness week across the country. The goal this year is to look at ways to reduce the amount of arson in residential homes. According to the National Fire Protection Association, arsons cause around 300 deaths annually.
 
"In West Virginia, penalties are anywhere from a fine, but if there is a casualty involved, the person could face prison time," says Michael Garrett, Nutter Fort Fire Department
 
Here are a few ways you can protect your home and your family..
 
Take simple steps like keeping the outside of your home well lit. Clear brush or blocks from your home, and most importantly, install smoke alarms. The state fire marshal's office also urges everyone to have some type of protection plan that include smoke alarms, a sprinkler system, and a home fire escape plan.
