(Press Release From Secretary of State's Office) Charleston, W.Va. – West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie E. Tennant said her thoughts and prayers are with the family of Barbour County House of Delegates candidate John Rose, who was killed Tuesday during the snowstorm resulting from Hurricane Sandy.
According to the Associated Press, George Rose said that his 60-year-old father, John Rose Sr., was checking fences on his deer farm in Barbour County on Tuesday when he was struck by a falling tree limb. He was a Republican candidate for the House of Delegates.
This unfortunate accident opens a special write-in candidate filing period. Those forms must be received by the Secretary of State’s Office before 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 1.
There will be a sign posted at all precincts in the 47th Delegate District informing voters that Mr. Rose has passed away.
However, according to state code it is too late to replace Mr. Rose’s name on the General Election ballot. Voters will still be able to cast their ballot for him during early voting and on Election Day. If he gets the most votes, citizens will have elected a vacancy and the Republican party executive committee of Barbour County will submit three names to Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and he will select a nominee to serve House District 47.
