Some community members played basketball to help 14 year old Sydney Owens, who has been in the hospital since she was found unresponsive behind her home last month.
Friends, family, and church members met at Robert C. Byrd High School to help raise money for the Owens family. Adults could get into the event for $5.00 and students for $3.00. Organizers also sold food and drinks, and accepted donations.
After the high school student was found with brain injuries she was take to Ruby Memorial Hospital. Police are still investigating what happened to Owens. She's recently been moved to Health South Rehabilitation in Morgantown and her father says she's now communicating and walking.
"She's doing well, she's in rehab. This basketball game is just such a blessing, because we're already getting medical bills," he said.
Owens is also a promising track star and her parents hope to have her competing soon. Not only are they hopeful for the next track season, but also for the Olympics.
