On Friday, Canaan Valley Ski Resort took another step in becoming one of the most popular winter destinations in the state. They opened their new tube park, which has 8 lanes and allows 250 tubers to use it in a two hour period.
"Well, it's a lot different than going in your street, as most people do when you go inter-tubing. It's a much longer run, much faster, and you have the ability to hook up to each other, and do a lot of things you can't do otherwise," said Jeffrey Marquis, Executive Vice President of Guest Services, Inc.
Not only did the tube park open, other additions are being made. The park cost $2 million dollars, and is part of a $12 million dollar renovation that is taking place. They're also adding to the lodge, and putting in a shooting area.
"It's the 41st year of commercials skiing here at Canaan Valley State Park. The tube park was envisioned because of the demand for the sport, and the activity has increased beyond comprehension," said Rob Gilligan, park superintendent.
With all of these additions, officials hope to attract even more people to Canaan. And they say the new and improved tube park is just the beginning.
"Well, we're adding so many things to this resort, it's going to be really exciting when everything's finished, and this is just going to be one part of it, and a rather unique part of it as well. I don't think there's a lot on the East Coast, places you can go to inter-tube like this," said Marquis.
"It's going to make Canaan Valley Resort a very viable location. What that does, Tucker County with it's nature, and the type of area we are, and where we host visitors year round," said Gilligan.
