While we always make sure to take the time to remember those who serve our country, we can't forget about remembering our roots, and that's especially important June 14, because it's Flag Day!

Flag Day commemorates the year our flag was actually adopted by the Continental Congress, which was on June 14, 1777. Flag Day wasn't first observed until 100 years later in 1877, but ever since then, it's been an American tradition.

5 News wanted to hit the streets to see what the American flag means to you.

"Freedom and patriotism is what the flag means to me. I'm proud to be an American, and I love putting my hand over my heart," said Judy Simmons, of Clarksburg.

In case you didn't know, Bernard J. Cisgrand was known as the "Father of Flag Day," as he was the one who lobbied Congress for many years until they finally decided to officially observe the special day.
