Clarksburg City Council has a new member. Bob Caplan was appointed by council Thursday night to fill the seat held for the last 27 years by Jim Hunt, who resigned last month.

Caplan was born and raised in Clarksburg. After going away to school and serving in the military, he returned to the city in 1972. He owns a jewelry store and has been active in the Harrison County Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Clarksburg Associates and other civic organizations.

"I just feel that Clarksburg has been a lifelong commitment of mine. I feel Clarksburg has a lot of room to grow. I feel it's moving in a positive direction now and I'm very happy to be part of it," said Caplan.

Caplan will be sworn in next week. Council also recognized the state champion Robert C. Byrd High School cheerleaders with certificates of appreciation.
