Starting this week, Congress will be back in session, and that means one thing: All eyes will be on the issue of U.s. involvement in Syria.
5 News got the chance to talk to U.S. Representative Shelley Moore Capito about the issue. She made her answer to supporting the president quite clear: No.
Capito told 5 News the main reason for this is she feels the United States has a national interest in Syria, the support from our allies.
She's also talked to many of the constituents in her district, and said they don't support it at all.
"I don't feel there's a coalition. I've talked to about 1,000 West Virginians, and I think there's 5 who support it. People are adamantly opposed to this. We need to have a global response to this. The United States can't do it alone, and there's no proof that in one strike, we would be done," said U.S. Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), of West Virginia's 2nd Congressional District.
After talking to Capito, 5 News talked to one woman to see if she supported her vote, and she told me the U.S. definitely needs to intervene in Syria because if it doesn't happen, the war might end up in our country.
"If we don't do something about Syria, it could come to our borders. I think we need to nip it in the bud,' said Linda Marsh, Fairmont resident.
Besides Syria, Congress also has to make a decision on the budget for the 2014 fiscal year. If they don't pass a resolution by the end of this month, it could once again lead to potential government shutdowns.
Capito said even though Syria is first on the agenda, she's confident her and her colleagues can work together to get the job done.
Sep 08, 2013 at 1:40 PMI remember Pelosi's leftist battle cry 5 yrs ago when they said "we must pass Obamacare before we can see what's in it."
I guess the new Democrat battle cry now is....we must attack Syria before we can see what's in there. Reuters even did an article that says Obama administration still has NOT proven who used the chemicals. Yet his newly picked secretary of state John Kerry still insists they have the proof. Could these yahoos please get their stories straight? At least agree to tell the same lie!! I don't trust this president nor his entire staff of incompetents to command an attack. And all we have to do is take a look at Benghazi.....Obama is STILL not investigating nor looking to find the RESPONSIBLE party for murdering our embassy workers. This administration is not competent!!
Sep 08, 2013 at 1:21 PMCongresswoman Capito is correct in not supporting a strike as Obama is too weak and indecisive a person to involve the USA in this countries' civil war. Plus...it's just John Kerry's word and Obama's word against a lot of other voices denying 'who' the guilty party is that used the chemicals. And let's face it; this entire Obama administration, including the president himself have proven to us all that we just can't trust them or believe them anymore!!! Too many lies and deceit for past 5 years to believe anything coming out of this administration.
