Dangers of Eating Tuna During Pregnancy

A new warning from Consumer Reports is urging pregnant women to stay away from eating tuna, as the mercury levels are high and could have negative health affects on the baby.
While consumer reports calls for pregnant women to stop eating tuna all together, doctors and the Food and Drug Administration say its not entirely bad, and can still be eaten in small amounts.
According to the FDA, Fish and shellfish are important parts of a healthy diet, even during pregnancy.
Doctors say seafood contains high-quality proteins and Omega-3 fatty acids, which could be beneficial to the baby's health and growth during development.
However, mercury levels, such as the levels in tuna, could be bad for the baby.
Even though some tuna has more mercury than others, doctors say you can still eat small portions.
“Well, we know tuna does carry amounts of mercury, always, we have recommended that women reduce their amount of intake as far as tuna goes to at least two servings a week, or about 12 ounces. Now, we know the white tuna sometimes has a little more mercury in it, so we've recommended that that was about six ounces, or one serving per week,” said Lee Ann Romeo, Patient Educator Supervisor at United Health Center.
The FDA says pregnant women should never eat shark, swordfish, king mackerel or tilefish, but are encouraged to eat lower mercury fish such as salmon and shrimp.
