MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - A West Virginia sheriff who allegedly hacked his wife's work computer in the Clay County magistrate court office has been charged with illegal wiretapping.
Federal prosecutors charged Clay County Sheriff Miles J. "Mike" Slack in U.S. District Court in Charleston on Monday.
The felony charge is in the form of an information, a document that typically signals the defendant is cooperating with prosecutors.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin says Slack secretly installed a keystroke logger on a government-owned computer in April, when he and his wife were still married.
Goodwin didn't immediately comment on the motive, but the couple has since divorced
Slack didn't immediately return a message left at his office.
He was a deputy sheriff for 16 years, ran unopposed for election last fall and assumed office in January.
