Two former Salem Police clerks took the stand Wednesday for the state during a trial against a former Salem City Manager.

David Mayle is accused of embezzling about $24,000 from public funds while he was city manager. He claims he's innocent.

While on the stand, both former police clerks said they had to write checks for the city, then leave them with Mayle to send. They said they would get calls from companies saying  that the bills were never sent, even though they knew they wrote them. The women also said there were a lot of transactions from the general funds with no explanations.

Former City Clerk Sherry Olenick was also accused of embezzlement but she entered a plea deal and agreed to help the state in their case against Mayle.
