A former candidate for U.S. Senate has been arrested in connection to a shooting in Clay County.

Hiram Lewis has been a lawyer in the Morgantown area, a former GOP treasurer, he ran a U.S. Senate seat, later won by Robert C. Byrd, in 2006. He also almost beat Darrel McGraw in a race for Attorney General.

State Police said Lewis shot Stephen Bogart in the leg Wednesday afternoon, after Lewis said he barged into his home in Procious. WCHS is reporting that police are suspicious of these claims.

In an email, State Police said Bogart claims he is also a resident at that house, and he wasn't breaking into it.

"I was totally within my rights. I was in my home when I made the, when I shot him, after he barged in my residence and busted the door down.  It's in God's hands now, but we are a Castle Doctrine state," Lewis told WCHS in an interview.

State Police said he's charged with malicious wounding and wanton endangerment with a firearm. His bond is set at $100,000.

According to the Associated Press, in 2004, the Republican narrowly lost a bid to unseat Democrat Attorney General Darrell McGraw. He made unsuccessful runs for U.S. Senate in 2006 and for attorney general in 2008.

If someone broke into my home, I would not be aiming at their legs. I am an excellent shot.
