On Monday it'll be one year since our community said goodbye to Sergeant Michael Todd May of the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department.
On Friday some of his friends, family, and fellow law enforcement members came together to remember the man they simply knew as Todd.
"It's a hard time for Todd's friends, family, and all of us that knew him and loved him," Sheriff Al Kisner, with the Mon County Sheriff's Department said.
They also learned that in May, May will be memorialized at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, DC.
"Something may happen on one certain day that makes you think about Todd," Kisner said. "Sometimes you ask, 'what would he have done during that situation?'."
May lost his life last February during a high speed police chase on Interstate 79 in Pennsylvania. Since that time the community said goodbye to him, and the man that crashed into May's cruiser has been convicted of the crime.
"I could call Todd day or night and I knew if I ever needed anything Todd would be there," Nick Demedici, May's best friend, and member of the Mon County Sheriff's Department, recalled.
"We never think something like this can strike so close to home, but unfortunately a year ago it did," Matthew Starsick, May's friend, and member of the Westover Police Department, said. "I think that a part of us will forever be changed."
Friday's ceremony was emotional, and it left the officers who protect the folks in Mon County with tears in their eyes.
"I ask all of you to honor Todd in 2013 by calling up a friend and taking a spur of the moment trip," Demedici said.
"Thanks to the community and Todd's colleagues," Todd's brother, Frankie May, said. "We'll continue to go on because we won't just morn Todd's loss, but we will celebrate his life."
On Friday Kisner also dedicated the training room at the sheriff's department as the Sergeant Michael Todd May training room.
