A foreign language course will not be offered by Harrison County Schools following this school year. The board of education voted Tuesday night 4-1 to eliminate the Chinese language program, which is offered at Bridgeport High School and at Nutter Fort.
There are currently two guest teachers from China teaching the course.
Superintendent Susan Collins recommended the cuts. The board has asked her to cut nearly two million dollars out of next year's budget.
"There's costs associated with doing programs like this. And while they are wonderful programs that we have been able to offer in the past, I think we're trying to tighten our belt. We need to look at each and every thing," said Collins.
By eliminating the program, the board will save about $65,000.
