If you watched 5 news Thursday night, you know Republican Representative John Boehner was re-elected as Speaker of the House. That may have taken some by surprise because almost a dozen of his republican colleagues withheld their votes or voted for someone else entirely.

Even though many of his colleagues voted against him, Senator Manchin said he respects Boehner. As part of that fiscal cliff deal, Boehner made a last minute request to include spending cuts. But most of his colleagues disagreed with him. About six weeks earlier, his colleagues applauded his re-election but the spending cut suggestion changed their minds. Needless to say, the measure passed without Boehner's idea included. Manchin applauded Boehner's courage.

"It was very courageous for him to put that bill up for a vote knowing that he didn't have the majority of his party with him and knowing that he could have risked his entire leadership position as being speaker by putting the good of the country first. And starting this process of mending and bringing us together," said Senator Joe Manchin.

Manchin said we need to come to the table before the debt ceiling deadline hits in about two months. Manchin said,"I want to work with everybody. I'm committed to put our country first and work for the betterment of my country."

Everyone 5 News spoke with Friday said they were not pleased with the work he's done as speaker of the house. One woman said all she has seen him do is sit there and stare at the president. Even with all of the negative talk from his colleagues and now everyday people, he was still confident he would be re-elected and it turns out he was right.

"When a person is not doing a good job and we are not making progress. And they get put back in a position to not make additional progress. I don't see how that helps the situation any," said Betsy Patrin, Harrison County Resident.

Even though the people 5 News spoke with Friday were not happy with Boehner's work, they are hoping this new year will help turn him around. If you feel differently, make sure to voice your opinions in the comments section of this story.
