A memorial service was held for the Spencer Family in Doddridge County Saturday afternoon. Community members were paying their respects to Fredrick and Dixie Spencer and their 9-year-old daughter who were all allegedly killed by the couple's son.
Salem International University was filled with people grieving for a family who lost three members on Monday.
"It leaves you speechless, you never would think that something like that could happen in such a small community like Doddridge County and it just kind of takes you back and makes you realize anything can happen anywhere," Student Teacher at Doddridge County High School.
Although it was not a sunny day, some folks said they enjoyed the rain. They said it was poor weather for a sad day.
"It's miserable. Anytime something like that happens were people lose their lives, you know, for whatever reason it may have been but losing it prematurely is never a nice thing," said Shawn Pynn, Salem Baseball's Head Coach.
Over 300 people filled the T. Edward Davis Gymnasium to show the family that they are not alone.
"Just to pay respects to the family. I didn't know them personally but since I am at school, being in the community, I just thought I should pay respects to the family," said Sean Williamson.
The family wanted their privacy in this time of mourning but they must have appreciated the support from the Doddridge Community.
"There's power in community, in faith and if we can be even a small part of that and help bring some peace to this family, that's all we can do," said John Luotto, President of SIU.
The Salem Men's Baseball Team volunteered to help out by shuttling people from their cars to the service.
"Well, I know it was something important to the Salem community. Obviously, there is a connection through the family and SIU and I figured that it would be a really good opportunity for our guys to do something for the community. I'm really big on volunteer work," Shawn Pynn.
If you didn't get to pay respects to the family Saturday a contribution can be sent to the Spencer Family Fund at Cornerstone Bank in West Union, Salem or Pennsboro.
