Two historical grave sites in Westover, may be preserved after a proposed land swap between the city and a local developer.
Council members unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance on Monday night, which will allow the city to give away unused property on Thornhill Avenue in exchange for the land containing the two graves on Western Avenue.
Construction was put on hold in June, while the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department investigated tips of a possible grave disturbance.
With the exchange, the city plans to build a park where the historic sites will be maintained.
Westover Mayor Dave Johnson said, "Initially he was just going to give the property to us and we could still do what we are going to do, but by us giving him something in return it makes everybody happy."
If approved at the city's next meeting on August 5, the exchange could be finalized the next day.
