Local hospitals stepped up to the plate and hit some home-runs for charity, while making new friends and gaining a few bragging rights along the way.

Four local hospitals stepped up to the plate this afternoon for the 1st annual Central West Virginia Hospital Softball Challenge.

Davis Medical Center, Sharpe Hospital, Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, and United Hospital Center competed for the championship trophy at Robert Bland Middle School in Weston, all to raise money for the United Way.

Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital Dr. John Wyllie says the event is about more than just fun and games.

"You can't help but watch a game like this and look at the enthusiasm with everyone and say 'I'd like to be apart of that'. And you don't get to be apart of that sitting at home, as opposed to coming out and joining your community."

United Hospital Center won the championship game to become victors of the first Central West Virginia Hospital Challenge.
