Word spread quickly through the entire Mountain State that Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum had been shot and killed on Wednesday afternoon.
A group who took the news especially hard was the law enforcement community.
5 News reached out to a couple of local sheriff's on Wednesday afternoon.
Lewis County Sheriff, Adam Gissy said he never met Sheriff Crum, but said his heart broke when he heard about the horrific news. He mentioned anytime an officer is killed it's like losing a family member.
"Law enforcement is a brotherhood," Gissy said. "We stand beside one another through thick and thin. Whenever a terrible tragedy like this occurs we ban together."
Gissy said in addition to feeling sorry for everyone at the Mingo County Sheriff's Department he also said he felt sorry for anyone who works in Mingo County.
