It was dogs galore in Buckhannon as local kids gathered to compete with their hunting dogs with the ultimate goal of winning a college scholarship.
There were more than a hundred people Saturday at the youth hunt in Buckhannon. Dogs and their owners competed in three different events: the bench show, the training session, and a simulated hunt. The secretary and treasurer of the Buckhannon Coon Hunters' Association, Chrissy Watson, said this is an important event for kids in the community.
"A lot of kids are interested in coon hunting now. But a lot of kids don't know that this club exists or anything like that," she told 5 News.
"Its not about winning. It's all about having fun and getting out there and doing it," added one of the young participants.
The hunt lasts until early Sunday morning, and the winners of each event receive trophies and prizes. The top winners move on to the national stage and have a chance to win college scholarships.
