In opening statements Tuesday morning, jurors heard from both the prosecution and the defense that Terry Messenger stabbed his wife to death; however, the two sides disagreed on whether or not it was a planned murder.

The state said they'll be able to present plenty of evidence to prove that Messenger maliciously killed his estranged wife, Ida, last November.
The defense attorney admitted that you'll probably hear a lot about how the defendant was an abusive husband but he asked the jury to wait until the very end, when Terry takes the stand in his own defense, to make their decision.
The state's seeking a first degree murder conviction. They have quite a few witnesses to call to prove that point. The defense said they won't cross-examine most of them.
The defense is claiming it was a manslaughter. The one witness they plan to present is Terry.
