On Wednesday, a popular store in Morgantown announced it will close its doors for good by the end of the year.

Kmart in Morgantown will be closing in December and many loyal shoppers said they're disappointed.

Charlie Scott said, "It's going to hurt a lot of people. Its got a grocery store, clothing store, garden center, now where are we going to go?"

Other shoppers said they hadn't heard about the stores future yet, but they could tell something was going on by the look on the faces of employees.

"I knew something must have happened today because I've never seen them act like that before. I've been coming here ever since it opened and everyone has treated me unbelievably good. I don't see why they would want to shut this down," said Rodney Rundle.

An anonymous source said workers were told not to talk about the situation and management was directed to tell people with questions to call the corporate communications office.

The company's statement read, "The Kmart store in Morgantown will close to the public in mid-December. Until then, the store will remain open for customers. The store will begin its liquidation sale on September 29. This store closure is part of a series of actions we're taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model. These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail - at the store, online and in the home. The store in Morgantown has 100 employees. They will have an opportunity to apply for positions at other Kmart and Sears stores. "

Customers said they're surprised this happened and now they wonder what will happen to all of the workers.

"It came out of the blue and I generally feel bad for the people who will lose their jobs," said Ingeborg Milam.

The anonymous source also said employees were told if they stay until the closing date they will receive a small severance package, but if not they'll get nothing. 5 News was unable to confirm this with store representatives.

Although the liquidation hasn't begun, some items are already beginning to be marked down.

Amazing how some people are so unsympathetic toward others. I bet if you were losing YOUR job you'd be complaining on here 24x7.

So you are entitled to your own 'opinion' but however your opinion could still be seen as rude and unfeeling. You give absolutely 'no' real excuse why you think a business should disappear other than 'you' personally didn't like it. Well guess what? Others did! And now some 'hard workers' just trying to support & feed their families will lose their jobs and uneducated, unfeeling, uncaring morons think it's great. Uh, I believe we all know what type of people act this way. No need to explain further. Losers and proud of it eh??

I find it amazing that people are commenting about how sad it is Kmart is closing.. There has been nothing but negative comments regarding that store for a very long time.. it needs to close and a customer friendly store needs to move in.. I have been in this store countless times..because its on my way to work.. however most of those times I have left without what I went it for due to NO SERVICE.. cashiers talking to eachother.. no check out open.. no one at customer service dept. The few times there are actually one or two check outs open.. the lines are so long.. whats the point.. not to mention the quality of the products.. and prices.. come on.. this store as been a sore spot in this community for a VERY long time.. close it.. and get something in here that is productive!
