A new armory is coming to Buckhannon that's going to include a conference center as well.

Ground has already been broken for the new joint facility along Brushy Fork Road in Buckhannon. The new National Guard Readiness Center and conference center is expected to cost about $50,000,000. The facility, which is on 44 acres, will replace the old armory on Route 20.

Locals said this'll be a great addition to the area.

Uphsur County resident Phillip Crites said, "Anything we can do for the armed forces or veterans is a good idea. I think it'll be an asset to the community as well."

Many groups in Buckhannon are looking forward to the extra space the new conference center will provide. Construction for this joint facility was held up a bit during the summer, but workers are now logging hours during the weekends to catch back up. While they had originally lost 40 days of construction, authorities said they're only about six days behind schedule.

Sidney Harmon, the senior superintendent for Paramount Builders, said, "We've used 100% local labor. We have people from the surrounding areas, within 50 or 60 miles of the site. That's something we're very proud of. We're very happy with the quality of workmanship."

Officials said the project should be finished in early August of 2014.
