The Upshur County Commission approved the hiring of a new deputy sheriff Thursday morning.

This will allow the sheriff's department to handle more cases, and keep everyone in the community safer.

They've been looking for someone to fill the position for a couple of months.

The new deputy, James Kennedy, will start in the coming weeks, and he tells us he's ready for the job.

Kennedy said he's excited to be in law enforcement, a career his father, Harrison County Chief Deputy Steve Johnson, has been in for decades.

The sheriff also told commission they've found a new Prevention Resource Officer to take over at Buckhannon-Upshur High School.

He'll start there on February 1st.
