This week is Nurse Appreciation Week, but United Hospital Center likes to celebrate all of their employees. So over there it's Associates Week.

A 5 News Reporter met a nurse and a therapist and got to hear their story about working at UHC and of course how appreciative they are for UHC celebrating them this week.

"We're very busy. There are a lot of patients that need a lot of care," said Julie Gabriel, Charge Nurse in Oncology.

The first week in May is Nurses Appreciation Week. So we decided to get a sneak peek at their daily life.

"I have to make sure patients come in and out of the hospital and quickly as we can get them in and as quickly as we can get them out. We try to take the best care of them as we can. We try to oversee everybody, making sure they're doing what they're suppose to do, and making sure the floor runs smoothly," said Gabriel.

"Respiratory Therapist take care of the overall pulmonary aspect of the patient. We take care of managing ventilators for patients that need artificial ventilation. We also respond to Code Blue in the hospital for patients that need cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. We also deliver medication," said Gary Johnson, Registered Respiratory Therapist.

Both of these employees have to be on top of what they do, so the physicians can know what's going on.

"We are the ears and the eyes for the physicians. We're here with them all the time. Physicians get plenty of phone calls from us because if something goes wrong we have to notify them," said Gabriel.

Employees say collaboration and communication is key.

"Communication is one of the top things. If there's not communication the patient doesn't get taken care of as well," said Gabriel.

"Together as a team we can get together with the physician to treat the patient to the best of our ability. Together as a team we can make those decisions from everybody's expertise," said Johnson.

All the employees we spoke with said they're extremely grateful for everything UHC does to show their appreciation.

"I think it's great that they've offered us a free meal and they've given us gifts. It makes me feel appreciated, so hopefully everyone else feels that way also," said Gabriel.

"It doesn't stop there because it motivates you. Through out the year at the hospital, here at UHC, they do other reinforcement and recognition, and rewards," said Johnson.

Nurses, Doctors, and Therapists are a major part of any hospital, but they wouldn't be able to do their jobs without the help of other workers in the facility. Tune in next Wednesday to hear their story.
