The Nutter Fort Fire Department got permission Thursday from the county commission to start charging insurance companies when they respond to fires and accidents.
A code in state law allows volunteer fire departments to do this but commissioners have to approve of the decision. Nutter Fort will hire a billing company that will actually deal with the insurance companies. This allows the fire department to get money back to make up for things like the costs of flare, oil dry, truck maintenance and fuel.
In Harrison County, Lumberport Fire Department also does the same.
