Matthew Edward Lamp
PRESS RELEASE Parkersburg police detectives have arrested Matthew Edward Lamp for his alleged involvement in the death of a three (3) year-old boy.
On Sunday at approximately 1:00 p.m., officers responded to CCMC in reference to a seriously injured child. The mother advised that the three (3) year-old male child was injured accidentally while playing in their Parkersburg home. The child was transported by medical helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Parkersburg detectives, uniformed officers, and the Crime Scene Technician executed a Search Warrant at 501 32nd Street, Lot A6, Sunday night, processing the scene for potential evidence. Detectives also began a series of interviews the same night.
Several detectives traveled to Morgantown yesterday to continue their investigation. The child passed away at approximately 2:45 p.m. An autopsy is tentatively scheduled for tomorrow in Morgantown.
Lamp, who was incarcerated in the North Central Regional Jail on unrelated charges, was interviewed at Parkersburg police headquarters this afternoon. Detectives and prosecutors elected to officially charge Lamp with death of a child by a parent, guardian, or custodian following that interview. Lamp is the reported boyfriend of the biological mother.
A Criminal Complaint filed in Wood County Magistrate Court alleges that on or about 9-29-12, the victim (D.K.), a minor child, was left in the care, custody and control of Lamp at 501 32nd Street, Lot A6, in Parkersburg. While in the care of Lamp, the victim received substantial injuries to his body by Lamp, which said injuries resulted in the death of the victim on 10-3-12. Lamp allegedly admitted to intentionally striking the victim.
Numerous detectives have worked long hours since the initial report at CCMC on Sunday. No charges have been filed against the mother or any other person at this time, however the investigation is continuing.
Lamp was processed and taken to Wood County Magistrate Court for arraignment. He was held without bond and is set to be returned to the Regional Jail. He will be scheduled for an appearance in front of a Circuit Court Judge in the coming days.
Lamp could face 10 to 40 years in prison if convicted on the charge.
