It looks like we might be getting some answers in the story about a college football star at Notre Dame, and the girlfriend who didn't exist. That's because apparently a man has come forward and admitted to creating the woman online to fool the athlete.
Now police are using it as an example of how things can go wrong when you meet someone on the internet.
It was a story that swept the country.
Manti Te'o was said to have lost his grandmother and girlfriend in a span of just a few hours on the eve of a big game.
Earlier this week news broke that the girlfriend never existed.
Some folks believe that Te'o made the story up just to gain national attention.
However Te'o claims he was the victim of an online hoax.
Officers with the West Virginia State Police said the story involving the hoax isn't unbelievable because they see stories like that everyday.
Sergeant Danny Swiger said more people than you think get involved in online relationships and unfortunately some folks don't have the best intentions.
Swiger said with everything we tend to put online it's very easy for criminals to learn a lot about us.
Scammers also use this trick to tug at our heart strings in order to get things. That's why police said it's good idea that if you meet someone online you ask a lot of questions.
"As human beings we want to trust what people have to tell us," Swiger said. "We feel everyone is genuine. I hope that people don't lose that, but you need to be cautious."
Swiger suggested that if you want to engage in an online relationship with someone online that you keep your guard up. He said anyone who is going to prey upon you is going to look for a weak spot.
Also, if you develop a relationship with someone online be wary if they refuse to meet you in person, or if they refuse to send you pictures with anything that might date them.
