The holiday shopping season is in full swing.
Over the weekend consumers across the country grabbed a record $59-billion dollars worth of Black Friday sales and some initial reports predict that number could grow by an extra $2-billion dollars thanks to Cyber Monday sales.
The good news is that a few of those deals will last all week so there's definitely time to get in on the savings. Unfortunately it's also prime time for cybercriminals.
According to a report by PriceGrabber nearly half of all shoppers plan to use a computer or smartphone to get some holiday shopping done. That's why the criminals are also poised to cash in this holiday season.
Police said they expect cybercriminals to use a bunch of new ways to try and steal our cash.
It's not all doom and gloom and that's because there are a few things you can do to generally keep yourself safe.
Those tips include:
  • Use a reliable website - They usually have safeguards in place
  • Watch what Wi-Fi network you shop from - It's easier for hackers to access your information on an open Wi-Fi network
  • Never reply to an email asking for personal information - Companies will call you if they have questions for you
  • Only use a credit card to purchase items
"In most cases if you're going to a reputable site you shouldn't have any types of troubles," Sergeant Danny Swiger, with the West Virginia State Police, said. "That doesn't mean you're not going to (have problems). There's thousands of people out there who are hackers trying to get your information."
