MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - A judge has denied bail for a 17-year-old girl charged with the premeditated murder of her former best friend.
Monongalia County Circuit Judge Russell Clawges ruled Tuesday that Shelia Eddy should remain behind bars as her case moves toward trial, now postponed to the week of Feb. 11.
Defense attorney Michael Benninger asked that arguments on other motions be delayed so he can develop more evidence. He says he has thousands of pages to submit on the change-of-venue motion alone.
Benninger says Eddy can't get a fair trial in Morgantown because of the publicity surrounding the 2012 stabbing death of 16-year-old Skylar Neese.
He also wants to suppress the confession of alleged co-conspirator Rachel Shoaf.
Skylar's father Dave Neese said, "I have to say we won this round because she didn't get bail. Everything was pretty much continued. I think it's for her own safety she's in jail. I don't want her out because she's done a horrible crime."
Eddy is charged first-degree murder, kidnapping and conspiracy.
Shoaf has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
