CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - A West Virginia mother who forced her daughter to eat red pepper seeds and burned her with cigarettes is headed to prison for what a judge calls torture.
Harrison Circuit Judge Thomas Bedell sentenced 22-year-old Stonewood resident Kelsey Turner to between five and 25 years in prison on five counts of child abuse resulting in injury. The hearing was Thursday in Clarksburg.
The Exponent Telegram says the toddler also had hemorrhaging in her right eye and bruises all over her body when authorities were called to investigate last summer.
A co-defendant, Frank Cherubino, is awaiting sentencing on one count of child neglect.
Assistant Prosecutor Susan Morris says the child is now doing "reasonably well."
Bedell denied a request to send Turner to the Anthony Correctional Center for young offenders.
