If you're looking for a reason to take it easy on the roads then researchers at West Virginia University might have the answers you're looking for, they have found that men are twice as likely to die if they're hit by a car.
All across the world there are more than one million traffic fatalities every year. People on foot account for about one third of them.
"It doesn't surprise me much," Shawn O'Connor, a Morgantown resident, said.
O'Connor wasn't shocked to say the least when 5 News told him about the new research from folks with WVU.
They found that guys are more than twice as likely to die if they're hit by a car. They came to that conclusion after looking at factors like who walks the most, who's involved in more accidents, and the fatality rate each gender had.
"It definitely has me curious as to why that's the case," Lisa Hall-Schiffbauer, a Mount Morris resident, said. "I've never really thought about it."
The folks who worked on this study said they'll have to do more research to pinpoint why this is happening, but Morgantown resident Ryan Schiffbauer thinks he known why it's the case.
"As a male I think that we have a little bit more of an aggressive personality," Schiffbauer said. "I guess we think that when we get to a crosswalk we think the car will stop for us."
In light of this study police also want to warn folks to be safe when crossing the street.
"It's best to cross at intersections," Patrolman John Morgan, with the Westover Police Department, said. "Even though the lights may be green, you should double check to make sure there are no vehicles coming."
