The leaves are changing, and temperatures are getting colder, which means one thing: flu season will be in full swing before we know it.

As of right now, most states are reporting low numbers of the flu, but the CDC estimates there were more than 22,000 cases of seasonal flu from September to December of last year alone.

5 News talked to one local school teacher who tries to keep herself protected because she's around kids most of the time. She says the best way to prevent yourself from getting sick is to take one easy step, wash your hands.

"Being a school teacher, I have the kids wipe their desks down with Clorox wipes a lot, and I make sure I wash my hands frequently," said Michelle Hayes, teacher.

Officials also say another easy way to prevent the spread of the flu virus is to get your flu shot every year.
