Not only can Twitter alert you to what's popular, it now also help alert you during an emergency.

A new service from Twitter allows government agencies and other organizations to send emergency messages directly to a users' phone during a crisis or natural disaster.

Users that sign up for these Twitter Alerts will receive important info via a text message or a special notification. More than 60 organizations have signed up for the new system.

Keith Queen, the agency director for Uphsur County EMS, said, "Our dispatch center and the Red Cross would be tweeting any kind of natural disaster that might be going on or forthcoming or the dispatch center could report road closings if necessary and that type of thing."

Users can pick and choose which alerts they'd like to receive through this service.
