A potential agreement between the United Mine Workers of America and Patriot Coal could come before any decision from a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge. But at this point, UMWA officials said the two sides aren't close to reaching a compromise.

The judge over the case is scheduled to rule on Patriot Coal's proposed reorganization under Chapter 11, 30 days from when the hearing began. That hearing was held last week and lasted five days.

Officials said both companies continue to meet in hopes of reaching an agreement before the judge's ruling. The judge has until May 29 to make a ruling on the case.
