Surviving a war's one thing. Beating cancer is another. Saturday morning, those who did both were honored.
The first ever Heroes of Hope banquet celebrated veterans who've beaten cancer or are still fighting. Nearly a hundred vets and their families were there.
The American Cancer Society was there for support, offering pamphlets about how to lead a healthy and normal life after cancer. An oncologist presented what's new in cancer research.
Several survivors even spoke about their experience.
Vietnam veteran and cancer survivor Rick Sheets said, "The doctor asked me what I was going to do about it, and I told him we were going to have to get something done because I had bikes to ride and had fishing to do. The nicest part is to see so many people in here that had it and have gotten through it."
The Elk's Lodge sponsored the event that they hope to hold every year.
