Fairmont City Council discussed on Tuesday the possibility of joining the Home Rule Pilot Program if it's extended by the legislature.
Council will narrow down a list of 11 benefits that were discussed, should the city get the opportunity to apply to the Home Rule Board.
City Manager Jay Rogers said that the city has been interested in Home Rule since the inception of the program and have been aware of the successes that Bridgeport, Wheeling, Charleston and Huntington have seen.
"Local issues such as taxation or the reduction of taxes. As we spoke tonight, business incentives, if the council here can make the decision that it's best to give a credit to somebody here, why should we - we shouldn't be handcuffed by what the state feels like we should do in Charleston," said Rogers.
Both the Senate and House of Delegates have bills currently in committee pertaining to the extension of Home Rule.
