Update 4/20:

Officials with the State Fire Marshal's Office were at the scene of a business complex that was heavily damaged by a fire earlier this week.

Fire investigators believe a fire at Total Dental in Bridgeport started behind the sign in the roof area. The sign and its wiring will be examined by engineers later this week.

Investigators are still trying to isolate the exact cause for the fire.

5 NEWS UPDATE: 4/18

Fire crews have confirmed to 5 News that Total Dental on Johnson Avenue in Bridgeport is a total loss after a fire broke out there Wednesday night. All other businesses in the Johnson Avenue Plaza will be shut down, at least temporarily.

Investigators say the businesses on the south end of the plaza mainly just received smoke damage, but all businesses were affected.

In an e-mail to customers, the owner of the Vino e' Vita wine shop said they received massive smoke and water damage, and will make a decision on whether they'll be able to re-open in the future.

5 NEWS UPDATE: 10 p.m.

Firefighters battled the growing blaze at Total Dental on Johnson Avenue for hours on Wednesday night.

The fire that started around 7 p.m. caused both Johnson Avenue and Lodgeville Road to be closed for hours.

Bridgeport Fire Chief Chuck Feathers said the firefighters had to work very carefully after the roof caved in.

"Where the roof is collapsed, it's unsafe to get up on the roof. Our guys will work slowly and safely to get back inside to get all of the remaining fire out but other than that we don't know a whole lot except somebody from up on the hill, up on the plaza up top, saw it from up that way," he said.

A woman who works next door said it was another person who actually told her the building was on fire.

"I was inside working, a guy from across the street actually walked over. He told me, 'You should probably call 911 it looks like the store is on fire.' So I walked out with my phone. There was a little flame under the sign. It looked like that's what started it, the sign," said Misti Haught.

As of Wednesday night, there was no official cause of the blaze. It did start to spread throughout the Johnson Avenue Plaza. Men and women who were in nearby businesses were all evacuated by police immediately when the fire was noticed. No one was hurt.

Firefighters from Bridgeport, Anmoore, Stonewood, Nutter Fort and Shinnston worked together to battle the blaze.

The Bridgeport Police Department and Anmoore EMS were also on scene.
