Last week 5 News told you about the major differences between home schooling your children and sending them to public school. Most of you understand how the public school system works, but not everyone gets to see what home schooling is all about. 5 News visited a family Friday who home schools their children.
"We started the home schooling journey last year. It's been a wonderful experience," said Heather Rowan, Home School Teacher.
Heather Rowan is the mother of two boys ages 4 and 7, Lucas and Ethan.
"I read. I do the bible and math," said Lucas.
"Me and mommy do math called arithmetic and whenever Lucas is doing something I go play or practice my piano," said Ethan.
Heather said she never saw herself home schooling, but now she cant imagine her life without it.
"Home schooling has been not just an educational choice for us but a way of life," said Heather.
A lot of people think kids just sit inside all day, but that's not the case.
"My husband and I value education greatly. We take them to museums and zoos. They've had a field trip at the fire department. they've been able to do so much with home schooling," said Heather.
Most people think kids who are home schooled are not very social, but Heather said it's actually helped her children.
"What it has done for my boys and their confidence. They are just growing by leaps and bounds because of their education being based at home. My son is more confident and more outgoing since we started homeschooling. He'll go up to kids and say hey can I play," said Heather.
Heather told 5 News just make sure you do it for the right reasons.
"I know there's a lot of parents out there who think about home schooling because they're fearful of the schools. You have to do it out of
conviction. Fear will not last. Conviction will. Always be 1,000% involved in your child's education whether its public school, private school, or home school," said Heather.
There are many different types of home schooling, this is just one.
