Child Safety Seat Laws Set to Change This Year

We're all talking about safety on the roads during the holiday season, but what about safety inside your car?

There are new car seat changes that go in effect Wednesday that parents will now need to keep in mind.

Starting Wednesday, the LATCH system should no longer be used when the child and car seat combined weight is over 65 pounds.

According to this new law, car manufacturers can't guarantee the strength of the anchors when adding the additional weight of the seat.

If the combined weight is over 65 pounds, law enforcement officials want parents to start using the seat belt restraint versus the LATCH system.

"Under the age of eight, and less than four feet, nine inches tall these children must be in a properly installed, maintained car seat. To do so otherwise is just so very dangerous for the children, and parents I don't think a lot of times realize how much danger they're putting their children in," said Chief Victor Propst with the Star City Police Department.

If you're a parent, remember your child must remain harnessed in the car, or booster seat until he or she is eight years old.
