Clarksburg City Council voted Thursday night to become the first municipality to ban the possession and advertisement of bath salts.
If their next vote passes, anyone who's advertising the synthetic drugs or is in possession of them will receive a fine. The drugs will also be sent to a lab and if certain chemicals are found, the person will then have federal charges filed against them. A few months ago President Obama signed a bill that banned many chemicals in both bath salts and synthetic marijuana.
Organizers of the ordinance say this is a huge step in the battle against the drugs, and they hope others will get on board. They plan on going to county commission and asking for them to write their own ordinance.
Long time member Jim Hunt announced he'll be leaving council at the end of the year. He said he wouldn't do so if he didn't think the remaining members were among the best people to represent the city.
