A few weeks ago on 5 News, we alerted you to an increasing number of threats made at schools recently. This is something that every administrator, parent, and student takes seriously, especially in the wake of the Newtown tragedy.

The most recent issue came up on Friday when another threat was made at another local school. It didn't end up being anything serious, but it does raise some questions. Are all these false threats truly harmless or are there negative effects?

Last Friday schools in Barbour County received some threats that turned out to be nothing, but we wanted to talk to local officials to see what they had to say about these false threats occurring.

Even though no one was physically harmed, Sheriff John Hawkins told 5 News that false threats being reported against schools is becoming a growing problem.

Officials say they're always prepared for any type of crisis situation. They train everyday to make sure they're ready for those kinds of events. But it's not fair for the people who have to suffer because of one person's lie.

"These incidents not only put the children and staff at risk, but also all the first responders and law enforcement. Unnecessary emergency responses risk the lives of all involved," said Sheriff Hawkins.

Sheriff Hawkins told 5 News this isn't something they're going to play around with. They're hoping they can get to the bottom of any false threat that occurs.

"We are going to take this investigation very serious and do our best to find the culprits. We are going to work with the board of education to try to prevent future incidents,' said Sheriff Hawkins.
