Firearms can be dangerous, and experts say even more so when you're just getting acquainted with them, so what are some of the essential guidelines for handling one?
Experts said one of the biggest things is making sure your hand doesn't float over to the trigger before you're ready to fire. Always keep the gun pointed down to the ground. Only aim it when you're about to hit your target. Make sure it's on safety at all times. Experts said not taking gun safety seriously can be a factor when it comes to shooting fatalities.
"I think it can happen because of inexperience. If you're using any type of alcohol or drugs while using firearms, you're asking for disaster too," said Brett Carpenter of the Barbour County Sheriff's Department.
If you've just gotten a firearm and want to get more acquainted with it, you can take a gun safety class. You can find one in our state at usacarry.com by searching their directory.
