About 5 million people need to get blood every year. Less than 38% of Americans are able to give blood. One local church is working with the community to get those people to come together, in memory of a former sign language interpreter who always worked to hold blood drives.

According to her friends, Holly Rae Sears lived her life for others. She was a sign language interpreter, a teacher's aide for the Harrison County Board of Education and a member of the Family Life Fellowship Church, where she also signed during services.

Another passion of her's was riding motorcycles. She died in a motorcycle accident in October 2010. Before that, Sears was a member of the Soldiers of Salvation Christian Motorcycle Club and Bikers for Christ. For years, she organized blood drives on behalf of those groups at her church. Now, other members are doing it in her honor and they need your help.

Only about 30% of their allotted spots are filled. They hope to see at least 62 people donate because the American Red Cross said hospitals are in dire need for this blood.

"She used to coordinate blood drives for Bikers for Christ. She had done it for a few years and it was something she really believed in and we just wanted to continue the tradition. If you knew Holly and she touched your life in anyway, this would be a good way to pay her back," said friend and event coordinator Joyce Stire.

The drive will be at the Family Life Fellowship Church from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 6. You can preregister a time to donate blood or show up at the door. To sign up, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org.
