HEALTH ALERT: Air Pollution Can Cause Cancer

You've probably heard for years about how harmful air pollution is to our environment, which has been believed to be extremely harmful to the environment, but get this: A new report from the World Health Organization says it can now be even more harmful to your health.

WHO says air pollution is now considered a harmful carcinogen, which can lead to cancer. The best way to describe a carcinogen, is that people are basically breathing in a lot of the chemicals that are found in cigarettes.

Recently, air pollution has been linked to causing things like global warming, as well as heart and lung problems, but now the World Health Organization says the fine particles found in air pollution can eventually lead to lung cancer.

Who's the suspect behind all this? A part of that would be from human beings themselves. We easily pollute the air from releasing harmful chemicals into the air from every day duties like driving.

One woman said while it's scary, there's other things that are more harmful than air pollution.

"I think it's truthful, but I think there's a lot of things to consider besides air pollution when it comes to cancer," said Doris Cuvit, Fairmont resident.

The study found in 2010, there were more than 200,000 deaths from lung cancer, which were connected to air pollution.

Even though this scares some people, another person said it doesn't worry her at all.

"I don't worry about it. God's in control," said Peggy Lorentz, Fairmont resident.

WHO said they are still trying to figure out if big cities with known air pollution problems like Los Angeles and Beijing have higher risks of developing cancer.

They consider this the most important hazard to our lives, next to smoking.
