How a CPAP Machine Changed One Man's Life

"I snored like a freight train," said James J. Mazzie.

Not only did he snore but he also scared his wife nightly.

"My wife said that I would hold my breath and she was afraid during the night that I would not wake up so she shook me and of course I'd turn over," he said.

That's why he went for a sleep study nearly 20 years ago.

"They immediately said, 'We don't know how you're not falling asleep while you're driving,' and so forth because I was holding my breath excessively for long periods of time," remembered Mazzie.

After that initial test, he went for the second one to try the continuous positive airway pressure machine, or what's more commonly known as the CPAP. Mazzie noticed changes immediately.

"My wife was so afraid because I was sleeping so sound that she would put her hand on my chest to make sure I was breathing," Mazzie said.

He said there's more benefits to the CPAP machine than just sleeping well, such as being able to enjoy long trips with his family.

"When we used to travel to Myrtle Beach, we used to travel part of it on Friday night and the rest of it on Saturday. I could never, at one point, drive to Myrtle Beach without falling asleep. Now I drive to Myrtle Beach in one day," described Mazzie.

He believes the machine worked wonders for him and he would recommend it to others.

"I believe that it has lengthened my life. I would tell anybody, 'Give it a chance. What do you got to lose?'"

Mazzie said the CPAP machine travels with him everywhere but he does know people who have it and don't use it.
