With the holidays fast approaching, one thing that may slip your mind during all the hustle and bustle is recycling. 5 News found out why it's especially important this time of year, and has some tips on how to make it as easy as doing your laundry.
Plastic, aluminum, and newspaper: three items that are the most common recyclables. But we see a lot more of them during the holidays.
Before Christmas, families are busy stocking up on everything from wrapping paper and bows to gift-wrapped boxes and aluminum foil for leftover meals. It can be easy to recycle all of those items, but you need to keep a few things in mind. Newspaper and cardboard needs to be kept dry, but all other recyclables should be rinsed off. It is okay to leave labels on them, but they should be taken out of bags and containers, before you place them into a recycling bin. Solid waste officials said one way you can make recycling a little easier is to buy a laundry sorter, which should only cost about $10.
"Sort your recyclables at home. When you're ready to come to our site just grab the bag, take it and dump it in, then take the bag back. That way you know you don't have to worry about disposing of garbage bags," said Bobbi Benson, Executive Director of the Marion County Solid Waste Authority.
One more important thing to keep in mind: If recycling bins are full, don't leave your bags on or around the bins. That's actually considered littering and violators can be prosecuted.
The Marion County Solid Waste Authority is also collecting any working or non-working Christmas lights at their office on Route 250 North. Non-metallic Christmas wrapping paper and Christmas cards are accepted in the newspaper bins, as well as phone books.
Recycling sites in Marion County are set up at the following locations:
