Everyone is trying to stay warm with these bone chilling temperatures outside, but what about keeping other things safe and warm? Many people don't think that their phones, iPods, or tablets can get damaged by the cold weather but it's possible.
5 News spoke with phone company officials from AT&T in Harrison County to learn what can happen to electronics and how to protect them.
When you expose your cell phone to extreme temperatures for an extended period of time there's a lot that can happen.Your battery can drain faster and the phones hardware can become weak and cause screens to crack. If you leave your phone in the cold for a while and then turn it on while it's still cold it can cause condensation to form inside your screen. Also, when phones are in cold weather they tend to go into a "sleep mode" and that can lead to permanent damage if left in that mode for too long.
First and foremost, don't leave your phone in the cold for a long time.
Many people want to buy cases that are trendy or popular but what's really needed is a protective case. Companies have made "life proof" cases that are water proof, drop resistant, and dirt proof that will help keep your phone in good condition. Most people, no matter what their age, can't put down their phone for even a second. If you're shoveling your driveway or outside sledding keep your phone indoors. Or even put it in a plastic bag in your pocket to ensure that it won't get wet.
"Some people need to be connected at all times. Obviously cold weather isn't going to stop your phone from ringing, so the best advice would be to put a Bluetooth headset in that allows you not to miss any conversation and any calls that come through. It also allows you to keep your phone protected at the same time," said Dawn Pride, Store Manager.
If your phone has been in the cold for a while warm it up before you turn it on. If you have a smart phone that has a touch screen there are touch screen gloves available in many stores. Using those can protect you and your electronics. Be sure to keep your belongings safe this winter.
