Hunting Season Affects Productivity at Local Businesses

While hunting is something that many folks here in the Mountain State look forward to every year, some business owners may not agree. That's because during hunting season, many employees trade in their suits and ties for camouflage and hunting orange.

While the holiday season naturally comes with more vacation days for most employees, extra days off that are spent in the woods cuts down the amount of work that gets done. But some construction business owners said they've figured out a way to avoid this.

"It's your choice. You either can work, on the first day of deer season, or you can go hunting. But if you work, you're going to get paid double time. We just made it pretty much like a holiday because, I mean, everybody considers the first day of deer season in West Virginia a holiday. So we give our employees a choice of what they want to do," said Dennis Cook, Owner & Operator of Cook Brothers Inc.

Cook said out of more than 20 full-time employees, five took Monday off. But they had a full crew the following day.
